Want to know what hiring managers are really looking for in remote job applicants? You’re in the right place.

Welcome to our brand-new Inside the Hiring Process series — exclusive interviews with Talent Acquisition teams from companies that hire or contract remote workers. Whether you’re applying for your first work-from-home job or you’re a seasoned remote professional, these insider insights will help you stand out, avoid common mistakes, and get hired faster.

Each post will walk you through exactly how to apply, what the screening and interview processes look like, and what traits set successful remote candidates apart. No fluff — just real tips from the people making the hiring decisions.

Inside the Hiring Process: ACD Direct

We’re kicking things off with ACD Direct, a well-known provider of virtual customer service support, especially in the nonprofit and fundraising space. They contract with remote agents across most U.S. states to answer inbound donation calls and support other client needs — and they’re currently recruiting!

We spoke with Lisa Byrd of the ACD Talent Acquisition Team, who gave us the full rundown on everything from how to apply and what to expect, to what sets top-performing agents apart. If you’re looking for flexible, 1099-based remote work with a mission-driven edge, you won’t want to miss this one.

📌 Company + Role Snapshot

RRR: What types of remote roles does your company typically hire for?

ACD: Virtual (remote) customer service representative to handle in-bound donation calls. There are other opportunities available as well once an agent has obtained some calls under your belt.

RRR: Are your remote positions primarily employee-based, contractor-based, or a mix of both?

ACD: This position is for Individual Independent Contractors (1099 agents).

RRR: Which locations or time zones do you currently hire from?

ACD: ACD hires from all time zones. Unfortunately, ACD Direct does not contract with residents of California, Delaware, Massachusetts, Louisiana, West Virginia, Wyoming, Vermont, and South Dakota due to state laws regarding independent contractor requirements. Please check back on our site for future updates in your location.

📝 Application Process

RRR: Where should applicants go to find and apply for your remote roles?

ACD: Applicants can apply using the following link:  https://acd-agents.com/  Here, they can also review the FAQs and Requirements.

RRR: What should applicants include in their resume or application to stand out? (e.g., specific skills, certifications, experience, etc.)

ACD: It is preferred that applicants have a minimum of 3 months’ customer service/remote/office experience. Moderate proficiency in computer operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

RRR: Do you require cover letters or online assessments?

ACD: We do not require a cover letter. There is a 3- video voice assessment that is submitted with the online application process.

💬 Interview + Screening

RRR: What does your typical interview process look like for remote candidates?

ACD: We do not conduct a formal interview. The interview is conducted virtually during the 3-video voice assessment.

RRR: Are there any skills tests or simulations involved?

ACD: There are not any tests or simulations involved in the registration process.

RRR: What qualities or traits do your most successful remote hires tend to share?

ACD: We find that those individual independent contractors that are self-motivated, possess strong communication skills, are flexible and tech savvy are the most successful.

RRR: How long does your average hiring process take from application to offer?

ACD: Registration can be completed in as little as 15 minutes. It is self-paced, so the actual time frame is determined by the individual independent contractor.

💼 Onboarding + Working Remotely

RRR: What does your onboarding process look like for remote hires or contractors?

ACD: Applicants visit the website to sign up then complete the registration that takes as little as 15 minutes.  They will enter their basic information and complete the 3-video voice assessments (interview).  Once approved, we will send the link to complete the background check.  When the cleared results come back, we will get them set up in certification and emailed so they can begin.  After certification, they are moved to handle live calls.

RRR: Do you provide equipment or a stipend for remote work setups?

ACD: ACD does not offer equipment nor offer stipends.

RRR: What tools or platforms do your remote teams use to communicate and collaborate? (e.g., Slack, Zoom, Notion, Teams)

ACD: ACD uses Discord and Teams as well as the Chrome internet browser.

RRR: How do you help new hires feel part of the team, even when working remotely?

ACD: ACD offers recorded and in-person (remotely) webinar sessions that offer different suggestions, hints, and trips to help them be successful. Our CEO will hold ‘town hall’ meeting where agents can speak, offer suggestions and/or take in information that is offered.

🙋 Final Details

RRR: Do you have any current and/or upcoming remote hiring initiatives or roles you’d like us to mention?

ACD: Currently, we are offering a $50 incentive to NEW applicants that complete certification and work 250 hours.  Our next drive is Saturday, May 31 – Sunday, June 8

RRR: Where can readers learn more or apply?
